New York Magazine called the book “brilliant” and The New Yorker said the poems “resurrect the newspaper when everyone else is declaring it dead.” His new book is called Steal Like An Artist — a creative manifesto based on 10 things he wish he’d heard when he was starting out. His work has been featured on 20×200, NPR’s Morning Edition, PBS Newshour, and in The Wall Street Journal. He speaks about creativity, visual thinking, and being an artist online for organizations such as SXSW, TEDx, and The Economist. He lives in Austin, Texas, with his wife, Meghan, and their dog, Milo. This book is not a HOWTO or a README on how to be an artist but rather a conversation between two extremely creative artists. I felt like a fly on the wall listening to these guys discuss art, business and their life. The biggest thing I took away from reading this is to always be thinking outside the box and trust your instincts. Austin creates poetry from the newspaper by blacking out words and leaving the words with the message of the poem intact. You know what, it's good work too.They discuss Austin's creative process and how he was able to get that work in front of people. Again, very good examples of creatively solving problems from a different angle. Being a successful artist himself, John knows and asks relevant questions that readers will find interesting and pertinent. Both John and Austin are very open and real, letting you inside their respective worlds.
The whole series is a must read for anybody interested in art, the process of art and life as an artist. If your an artist it will inspire and get you thinking on ways to push yourself to the next level.
