The discovery of thousands of empty abalone shells and two murdered divers sends Lieutenant John Marquez's poaching investigation in a new—and very risky—direction. Former DEA agent and now head of a special operations unit of the California Department of Fish and Game, Marquez learns he himself has been targeted as the next victim. Stalking him is Kline, a vicious drug smuggler turned abalone smuggler who has a vendetta against Marquez.

John Marquez is supposed to protect wildlife, not solve murders, but the only way he can break the multi-million-dollar abalone-smuggling ring, as well as save his own life, is to find and stop Kline. A fast-paced crime novel set along the majestic Northern California coastline, Shell Games introduces a tough, complex, and appealing hero and a masterful new series.

Shell Games by Kirk Russell was a book picked by my Library Reading Group. It's the first one in a long time that became a chore to read. It's not that the writing was bad but the plot was so convoluted and had so many characters I had to keep checking my notes to remember who was who.

Basically, John Marquez works for Fish and Game in some elite yet poorly funded unit. He used to be DEA but got in a pickle in Mexico and the "enforcer of sorts" may be back to get him in this iteration of his life.

Looking at my notes we have a story that encompasses Fish and Game, The FBI, flip/flop Informants, a pregnant partner, a separated spouse, an anorexic daughter and an evil hit man. Yes, and abalone poachers - I guess this is what the book is supposed to be about but it comes off as means to get John behind the wheel of a car. John spends most of his time driving from here to there and back again. Then some more driving and then some eating in his car. I'm quite sure that this plodding along really describes the day to day activities for these Fish and Game guys but sure makes for a tedious read.

Shell Games A John Marquez Novel John Marquez Crime Novels edition by Kirk Russell Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I'd give it five stars if it weren't for the language - far too many F***s in the book. But quite frankly, I'm not sure I've ever read an author who writes as well as Kirk Russell. The way he puts each paragraph together is so perfect and so concise that he gives the reader a full understanding of what he's describing with probably a fourth of the words most authors would use to describe the same scene. He puts you in John's head in a way very few authors can. Outstanding job!
It tends to drag a little. Not top notch and not as good a read as Signature Wounds, but not so bad that I wouldn't try another in this series. If I were permitted, I'd give it 3.5 stars. The big problem with the story is that it tends to plod along with our hero chasing abalone poachers, when there are murderers to be caught. We know John Marquez it going to solve the case, despite the fact that he is being told by a zillion other agencies and his own boss to back off. There is entirely too much going here and there, so you feel like the story is more of a travelogue than a mystery.
As an avid reader, I have read alot of different crime/mystery books. I have to say that I really enjoyed the Fish and Game aspect of this book and the others in the series. In this book, we learn about abalone poaching which is something I had no idea even happens. The main character is strong but human and faces real ups and downs. No over-inflated protagonist ego in this book. Thank you for a solid story that made me think about protecting wildlife.
I'd never read Russell's books before so I thought I'd give him a try. While Marquez is different sort of protagonist, I found myself ambivalent about finishing the book. To me, the best books are those you hate to put down and can't wait to pick up again. Those books where you are sad when you reach the end and hope for a sequel. This book didn't get me there. It was OK. I think the main problem for me was that I didn't really care about any of the characters that much. I felt the most empathy for the Vietnamese poacher and his family but they were, unfortunately, minor players.
I take a break from non-fiction from time to time for an exciting adventure tail or spy novel. Ian Fleming never disappoints and Nelson DeMille is the best. I hoped for the same with this author but I found the character's family issues tiring and distracting from the detective story. The rivalry between the Fish and Game and the FBI seems so worn out after a lot of stories of friction between the FBI and local police or between the FBI and the CIA. A little of that as backdrop goes a long way. Too much and you find yourself asking if there are any adults among the characters.
The main character has so many setbacks that he starts to appear to be a total loser instead of a guy who will triumph in the end. I found myself putting off getting back into the book rather than not being able to put it down. The story is okay but it stops short of being a compelling read that I would recommend to others enthusiastically.
Kirk Russell's mystery novels all have one thing in common; a plot which twists and weaves unexpectedly. Russell is a talented writer and equally adept at researching plausible storylines. I'm a pretty tough critic of any law enforcement centered mysteries with my 28 years of police experience, but every one of the "John Marquez" series passes with flying colors! Not only that, but Russell manages to make his novels educational as well as entertaining. I have friends and former colleagues who are game wardens, including a couple who worked undercover, and their own "War Stories" parallel the plot lines of this series. Kirk Russell develops his main characters well, without making them predictible or boring.
Every one of the novels in this series is of great quality!
This book was ok. It was too slowly paced for my tastes. That and the interwoven storyline concerning abalone over fishing just wasn't that exciting and as such made it hard for me to stay interested. Despite the other underlying mysteries and subplots. Did I mention the slow pace? Yeah, this is NOT an action packed booked. It was just really hard for me to get invested in the story and the characters overall. Hopefully book 2 in the series picks up the pace. It's kind of hard to begin with to make a Fish and Game Warden/Investigator exciting and believable on paper. So a little more character development is needed. John Marquez as a character has promise, but not if the story lines are going to be this slow paced.

As a series the John Marquez series holds some promise, it just needs to have a little more action and exciting story subjects. Abolone just doesn't do it for most folks. At least it didn't for me.
